What If the Action Plan Were Implemented?

Ekrem DumanliTurkey has been discussing the "Action Plan to Fight Reactionaryism." This is a considerably serious case. Some would be relieved and happy if the officials announce that the document was fabricated.

However, no one can describe it as "fabricated" or "false." When the military prosecutor expressed his "opinion" about the issue, this revealed an ironic truth. Some "news channels" rushed to report the military prosecutor's opinion via live broadcast. However, this was not a refutation, just an "opinion" which was weak and far from convincing. When this is the case, one must consider the following possibility: what if the plan were implemented?

"Some agents inside the Justice and Development Party [AK Party] will be mobilized," the plan said. The intention is obvious: to create political chaos. Can we find any democratic awareness in the attempt to create a political crisis while the century's greatest economic crisis is under way? Moreover, is the military authorized to send agents inside a political party or plot nefarious conspiracies using such agents? What about the media? Some media executives assumed a cautious approach toward the "plan to finish the government," but if these plots had been implemented against the AK Party, would they still choose to remain "coolheaded"?

"By arranging the seizing of weapons and ammunition in the Işik [Light] Houses, the Gülen community will be declared to be a terrorist organization," the action plan explained. Suppose this heinous plot were implemented and, during a house search, "weapons and ammunition were arranged to be found." What would happen? Today, some say, "We hope that this document is a fabricated one," and others ask, "What sort of a military is this that allows its documents to be leaked?" as if to express regret over the leakage, not what was leaked. If this horrific plot had been implemented, what would they write and what headlines would they run? The mobilization of the Military Prosecutor's Office and the ensuing flurry of news stories is another component of the plot.

And, this is the real danger! There may be some members of the military who engage in actions that cast a shadow on the spiritual personality of the military. But it is sad to see that there are many civilians with the same mentality who unfortunately fail to understand what democracy is in this country. You can find them in the media, in the bureaucracy, among people of art and politicians. But you cannot expect the sun of democracy to rise over a country where there are so many people who are eager to take a role in dark scenes of psychological warfare tactics!

How I wish I could say: "Do not fear; whatever conspiracies are plotted, the intellectuals of this country who are love democracy will never be deceived by these plots." If only I could say that. Those who hailed the Feb. 28, 1997, process, those who applauded the memorandum of April 27, 2007, those who sold their souls in order to find an excuse for the absurd requirement of a quorum of 367 deputies, those who undermined an article passed by Parliament with the approval of 411 deputies, those who exerted pressure on the judiciary and politicians in order to discredit the Ergenekon case... All of these were witnessed in this country. A military coup is an offense for which not only the military can be blamed.

There is no need to go very far back in time to find examples. Just have a look at the latest labeling effort. It seems as if some of these plans were already implemented without our knowledge. What is said in the plan drafted by Senior Staff Col. Dursun Çiçek? Concerning the military officers who are defendants in the Ergenekon case, it says that news stories suggesting that these officers are innocent will be sponsored. It claims that those who make "magnificent" analyses concerning Armenia and Greece should be given greater space in the printed and visual media, adding: "The voter base of the nationalist parties should be expanded in this regard. The AK Party should be discredited in the eyes of the general public." When you read these sentences, everything is clear: those who abuse nationalist sentiments in this country are actually those who were guided by this action plan to create enmity between Azerbaijan and Turkey.

There is no need for more examples. Note this horrifying plan and then take a look at the propaganda launched in the media. You will see the whole picture then. Unfortunately, some intellectuals ― particularly those in the media, the judiciary and politicians ― are voluntary implementers of psychological warfare. What they fail to realize is that Turkey is no longer the old Turkey. It is no longer possible to deceive the general public with lies and goad them along for some nebulous political goals. This is what civilian awareness is. Those who fail to accept this are striding the wrong way.
