Did the Gülen Movement emerge because of a religious conflict in Turkey?
No. It did not emerge because of any conflict, nor as the expression of a conflict, let alone one between the religious-minded and the secularists in Turkey.
Some of those who oppose the Gülen Movement for their own ideological reasons try to portray any effort from the faith-inspired communities as reactionary or fundamentalist, but the Gülen Movement has never been connected with any anarchy, terror or misuse of office. Any attempts to label or ‘frame’ the Gülen Movement in this way have no concrete basis and the Turkish public and the courts have rejected all such allegations. The overwhelming majority in Turkey does not see the Movement as fundamentalist, nor as posing any threat to existing political or economic institutions.
