What makes the SMOs leading institutions in their field inside and outside of Turkey?
The interweaving of the service-project mentality with different integrative strategies makes the SMOs successful. What makes them leading institutions in their field inside and outside of Turkey is that employment is based on specialized training and on formal certification organized and issued by the States where participants are active. Employment and advancement is in accord with knowledge, achievement and professional expertise and competence rather than seniority or preference given to friends and relatives. In the SMOs, which are institutionalized and professionalized – for example, the educational institutions, hospitals or the media – there are paid staff who are not active in the voluntary aspect of the Gülen Movement’s activities but are nevertheless broadly sympathetic to its aims, and individuals from the grassroots of the Gülen Movement who are pursuing a career in those SMOs.
