A Master of Turkish Dance From Senegal

With their deep emotions, reserved deportment and melancholy glances, they are in the process of writing a universal legend of sorts.

Actually, they are not writing, but instead creating colorful embroidery with love, faith and altruism. Though at its base this embroidery is full of Anatolian motifs, carrying Turkish, Kurdish, Laz, Bosnian and Circassian symbols, it also includes the colors and tones of Tanzania, Vietnam, Japan, Argentina, Tunisia and Senegal. Last year, students from 100 different countries attended the Fifth International Turkish Language Olympics. This year, the number of nations represented is up to 110. Interestingly, many of the students here in Ankara are from countries which don't even have official representation in Turkey. Looking at the skin colors of some of the students and asking them questions (without meaning to) in English, these students then answered me in Turkish, thus plunging me into the world's sweetest sense of embarrassment.
