Aytmatov: Turkish Schools Spread the Word of Mevlana

Renowned Kyrgyz writer Cengiz Aytmatov compared Turkish schools to the legendary Sufi Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi, he described as having enlightened the world with his thoughts 750 years ago, just as Turkish schools are doing today.

The writer, who was in Konya for a special reception, said he was very happy to be in the city of Mevlana, calling Konya "an important city for Turkey." The teachings of Mevlana should always be remembered, he added, noting that although Mevlana is not alive today, the cultural and educational seeds he planted have blossomed. Turkish schools are teaching Mevlana's philosophy all over the world and increasing cultural awareness, Aytmatov said, adding that he has visited a few of these schools. "While walking through the school I felt like I was at home. As I hugged the students, I felt like I was hugging my own children. I believe these schools will have a significant contribution to world peace," he said. He also referred to Fethullah Gülen, saying he felt that his was a God-sent mission for peace.

The writer stated that Turkey is a leader among Turkic countries and urged the Turkic peoples to adopt common policies. The Turkic nations have suffered immensely from communism, Aytmatov said, "but it is time for unity and cooperation." He added: "Turkic nations that cannot cooperate will be subject to pressure indefinitely. If we do not protect our national values, then in 100 years we will not know how to speak our native language. The Turkish schools around the world are conquering cultural issues. All Turkic populations should live together in unity. Let increasing awareness about ourselves be our first priority. Let us increase cooperation with each other."

Aytmatov's most recent book, "When Mountains Fall," will be available in bookstores in Turkey soon, translated into Turkish. Currently copies are available in both Russian and Kyrgyz. The book highlights global human understanding. Aytmatov, who has written several books translated into many languages, said: "I am very pleased with the interest people have towards my books. My books have been translated into Nepalese and Marathi. I had never heard of the Marathi language before. A tribe in India has even translated my books into their native tongue. This is an honor for the entire Turkish world."
