Conference Examines Gülen Peace Contributions

The University of Maryland set the scene for a recent conference sponsored by the Rumi Forum. The focus of the evening was to highlight the Gülen Movement and its contributions in promoting world peace.

The conference entitled "Preventing Violence and Achieving World Peace: The Contributions of the Gülen Movement" brought together academics and diplomats to discuss the Gülen's movements efforts to promote peace and embrace diversity.

Dr. Ori Z. Soltes, of Georgetown University, gave the keynote speech and told the audience that the Gülen Movement has promoted peace through its educational programs as well as its media, cable and Internet programming.

In the first panel at the conference entitled "Preventing Violence and Achieving World Peace," Dr. John Davis from the University of Maryland said studies have shown several societal factors increase the likelihood of violence or war.

Peter Kovach, from the U.S. State Department, praised the Rumi Forum and the Pacific Institute in Los Angeles for their work in promoting peace.

Dr. Imad-ad Dean Ahmad of the Minaret of Freedom Institute wrapped up the session by emphasizing the critical importance of education to promote tolerance and peace.

In the second panel, "The Contributions of the Gülen Movement to World Peace," panelists discussed how Gülen's address the three roots of violence - ignorance, prejudice and poverty through schools, dialogue groups and charity groups.
