Gülen Movement Akin to Nice Symphony, Says Scholar

The Gülen movement is similar to a well-conducted symphony as its basic aim is to unite people and bring about solutions to their problems, a renowned scholar from Cairo University has said.

Speaking at a three-day conference on the Gülen movement organized by Cairo University and held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo last weekend, Pakinam El Sharkawy, a professor of political science at Cairo University, said the movement does not seek to defeat others but to bring people together and to remove prejudices among them.

"The movement tries to respond to strong winds by creating a soft and soothing atmosphere," he said.

Also present at the conference, Dr. B. Jill Carroll, the executive director of the Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance at Rice University, said she believes the movement's sole aim is to serve world peace. The Gülen movement, inspired by Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen's moderate views, has millions of followers in Turkey. It has also opened numerous schools around the world.
