Gülen Movement's Contribution to Liberal Democracy

A two-day conference on the Gülen movement's contributions to inter-religious dialogue and world peace kicked off yesterday at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

On the second day of 'Islam in the Age of Global Challenges: Alternative Perspectives of the Gülen Movement' Conference, Hashemi asked why Arabs are falling behind such movements. He, then, responded the question himself by saying "the major reason is difference in cultural background rather than religion itself."

Hashemi concluded his presentation with offering his admiration to the Gülen movement which has been demonstrating Islam as the religion of peace and love through education.

In the conference, it was often highlighted that Gülen Movement has proved that Islam is compatible with democracy, fundamental human rights and freedoms not only in Turkiye but also in the whole world through educational endeavors.

Prof. Paul Weller of Derby University in England said "Gülen's main understanding of dialogue is tolerance which brings a deep conviction of others' freedom of thought and practice. This approach corresponds to the freedom of religion which has a vital importance in today's world."

Drawing a great attention from a broad spectrum of participants, has provided an oppurtunity to examine the Movement in all aspects. While the academics paid a great attention not to give political messages, they deeply examined the social, educational and cultural dimensions of the Gülen Movement.

Academics and students from the universities of the US and the world, and clergy attended the conference.
