Reports of Gülen Investigation Prove False

Abdülkadir Aksoy, lawyer for Fethullah Gülen — a Turkish intellectual and scholar — has said a news report in the Milliyet daily on Tuesday that suggested an investigation has been launched into Gülen is untrue.

Milliyet reported on Tuesday that an investigation was initiated into Gülen by Hamza Keleş, the deputy Ankara chief public prosecutor responsible for investigating terrorism and organized crime, upon a criminal complaint by an individual named Mustafa Gürmeriç, who claimed that Gülen was involved in acts to change the existing constitutional order and establish a new state governed by Shariah law. But Aksoy said yesterday that Cemil Tuğtekin, the prosecutor to whom the complaint was forwarded, ruled that no legal proceeding against Gülen was necessary and there was currently no investigation against his client.

"Individuals should not abuse their right to file criminal complaints with such unfounded accusations and engage prosecutors and the public in vain," Aksoy said. Gülen was cleared of all charges against him by the Supreme Court of Appeals Penal General Committee in June, which upheld an earlier decision to acquit by the Ankara 11th Criminal Court. Gülen was accused of "establishing an illegal organization in order to change the secular structure of the state and found a state based on religious rules." (Metin Arslan, Ankara)
