Rumi Awards Recognizes Excellence

Community leaders, educators and lawmakers alike gathered in Washington, DC last night for the Rumi Forum's annual award ceremony. The event recognizes outstanding achievements the promotion of inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue.

Congressman representing several states from all over the US began the night with ardent greetings, they said they were honored to host such an event in the Canon room and were very impressed by the representation of so many different countries and organizations.

The Congressional Service Award went to 11th District of Virginia Congressman Gerry Connoly who said he appreciated the values of The Rumi Forum, which represents tolerance, understanding and respect.

Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference received the International Pecae Award.

John Borelli of Georgetown University, received the Commitment to Interfaith Service Award. He emphasized that one of the most exciting features of inter-religious dialogue are the surprises.

Sidney Griffith from The Catholic University of America received the Rumi Peace Award. He talked about how he met and was honored to be a guest of Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish Muslim scholar, who has inspired dialogue activities all around the world.

Media Excellence Award was shared by Ebru TV, an Emmy-winning multicultural cable television network, and the host of Interfaith Voices Radio Show, Maureen Fiedler.

She mentioned how her radio show started in the awakening of 9/11 in which people hungered for a better understanding of others.

She also made a quick announcements for the upcoming Interfaith Voices next Sunday where the listeners will have a chance to hear an interview about Fethullah Gülen.

The night ended with a group photo of all award recipients gathered together.
