Sama School Topped in Science Olympiad

In March this year a number of Sama school students took part in the SAASTA Olympiad. The Olympiad is a countrywide science competition, which is held annually for grade 10 to 12 learners.

Each year over 19 000 learners from schools across all the nine provinces of South Africa and from SADC countries participate in the Olympiad. The competition is aimed at stimulating interest among young learners to study towards careers in the science and technology disciplines. The actual examination comprises two sections - physical science (i.e. physics and chemistry) and biology. Learners are given the option of writing either the physical science or biology paper.

Sama School learners after having spent many hours preparing for the Olympiad were fortunate enough to perform exceptionally well and were all ranked in the top 100 students. Eight of the students are among a select group of learners who were identified as individuals who demonstrated exceptional potential in the Olympiad and are invited to participate in an all expenses paid for youth science event to be held at the University of Pretoria from the 29th to the 3rd July 2009. The local Youth Science Week programme for some 100 top performers in the Olympiad includes excursions, lectures and workshops, offering an additional enrichment experience.

Futhermore, one of the Sama learners, Faatimah Mansoor having achieved 82 % in the Biology section of the Olympiad was ranked  among the top two national winners and was a special guest of honour at the National Science and Technology Forum Awards. Among the top five national winners, there are 4 students from Sama school. The gala dinner was held at Gallagher Convention Center on the 2th July, 2009. By being invited to such an event Faatimah was allowed to share in the celebration of inspiring work and people in various science, engineering and technology fields. She also had a chance to rub shoulders with some of the greatest researchers and innovators in South Africa. In addition to her many achievements Faatimah is also fortunate enough to be selected to attend the London International Youth Science Forum to be held during July-August this year.
