The Future of Reform in the Muslim World: Experiences in Comparison with the Gülen Movement

The Arabic/Turkish relation is witnessing a positive development on various governmental and public fronts and on various forms of political, economical, cultural, artistic and scientific levels.

This conference titled "The future of reform in the Muslim world" is held under the patronage of the cultural studies center and the intercultural dialogue center at Cairo University on one hand and the Academic and internet studies along with Hiraa magazine in Istanbul on the other hand. The conference emphasizes the importance of intellectual and intercultural dialogue between the Arab and the Turks in general and the Turks and Egyptians in particular mainly on issues that concern the Islamic nation in general with a special focus on "Reform and Recreation" which tops the list of the issues to be discussed.

This conference is part of a series of activities and scientific programs carried out by the "Center of cultural studies and intercultural dialogue" for the sake of promoting dialogue within the Islamic civilized nation. The core of which is "The Arab Turkish dialogue" and "The Turkish Egyptian dialogue". The earliest work of this center was in December, 07 which organized the first "Turkish Egyptian dialogue workshop in Istanbul in cooperation with Abant forum for dialogue".

The conference stresses on the fact that diversity in the recreational and reform models originates from "The Islamic reference". Giving a floor for diversity among viewpoints that operates under a unified system is essential and is a clear demonstration of how Islam is a comprehensive system. Moreover, this diversity reflects the true origin of views and is in line with the nature of the political and social realities and responds to the essence of the human nature which is against stereotyping and calls for diversity. Such diversity goes in parallel with the essence of Islam which calls for diversity in harmony with the diversified nature of the universe and social life.

Going back to Islam and granting it as a source of reference is what open doors and welcomes different interpretations that runs in parallel with our reality and that aims at promoting reform, development and welfare to all nations.

Among the main goals of this conference are: Introducing the Academic elites, introducing the Arab and Egyptian audience in general, introducing the Turkish "Fethullah Gülen movement" that is considered a social civil reform movement with an Islamic background and has a global impact on promoting dialogue among different faiths, disseminating information, providing health care, fighting poverty, promoting social solidarity, caring for the environment, enlightening public opinion, enhancing the peace process and renouncing violence and terrorism whatever its source.

The conference also aims to deepen the scientific knowledge about efforts of reform and renewal in the Muslim world undergone through the last half of the century highlighting the efforts and activities of the Sheikh Fethullah Gülen, with his programs spanning large areas inside Turkey and abroad in more than 140 countries around the world making it the subject of many international conferences held in many countries worldwide namely: the international conference of the British lords council in the year…, the international conference in El Karmalin palace in Russia in the year… and the international conference of the European union parliament in the year… in addition to many seminars and scientific activities done in some American and Australian universities.

Many questions are addressed by the researches and discussions brought up in this conference that are answered through well balanced scientific dialogue. From these important questions are: how did the reform and recreation trends come up in the Islamic nation during the last half century? Who is this "Turkish Sheikh, Muhammad Fethullah Gülen"? How do we interpret the spread of his call and his movement on a global scale inside and outside of the Islamic countries? How did this movement succeed in positively communicating with the western elites with its scientific institutions, media and cultural entities in comparison to other Islamic reform movements? What are the prospects for future cooperation with this movement to take advantage of its successful experience in fighting real life problems and future challenges in the Muslim and the Arab world?
