Turkish School Boasts Africa Maths Champ
The Turkish-South African College, known as Cemal Karacan Star College, in Durban has won a Gold medal at the 19th Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) held in Pretoria between April 19 and 26.
A pupil of Cemal Karacan Star College won the Olympiad, in which pupils from all African countries go head to head in a test of mathematics.
"It was hard work. I spent a lot of time studying, so it was a relief to win, many thanks to my school and teachers who guided and supported me." Arlton said, the maths champ of Africa.
"I wish to congratulate Arlton on his achievement and school's dedicated and committed band of Turkish educators for their contribution to this success. I am certainly thrilled by this newest recognition" said Dr Deena Moodliar from Department of Education.
Principal of the college, Ilhami Demirtas said that Gilbert's win was good for South Africa, and that he had done the school proud once more. The school has amassed many academic accolades over the years. With this latest medal, the total number of medals won by the school has risen to 394 (207 Gold, 65 Silver, 122 Bronze) in 7 years since the college was established in 2002.
"We are very happy to see the achievement of our learner and we are hoping to see him in Germany for International Maths Olympiad (IMO)." said Maths teachers, Ismail Bayindir and Huseyin Akinci.
