Turkish Schools Medal Coup in Science Olympics
Once again Ankara Samanyolu Private High School, Izmir Yamanlar Private High School and Istanbul Fatih Private High School take the top prizes at the 13th National Science Olympics organized by Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK) in Turkey recently.
Fifty-four medals were granted for the entire competition in which Samanyolu obtained 14, Yamanlar 12, and Fatih six medals, repeating their previous success.
Izmir Science High School won eight medals and Ankara Science High School received six proving their difference to other public schools.
Students who were successful in the International Science Olympics, National Mathematics Olympics for primary schools and National Science Olympics this year were presented their prizes at a special award ceremony.
State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin and Education Minister Huseyin Celik participated in the ceremony held Tuesday.
Samanyolu High School ranked first in the 13th National Science Olympics with three gold, three silver, and eight bronze medals; Yamanlar followed with two gold, three silver, and seven bronze medals.
Deputy Prime Minister Sahin speaking at the ceremony said the way to be successful in the fight against corruption is dependant on science and technology.
Education Minister Celik, in his speech, told students the good news relating to the Uzan Farm in Pamukova that was transferred to the Ministry of Forestry and later to the Ministry of Education, noting that it will be made into a private holiday resort for successful students who earned awards in the Olympics, together with their parents and teachers.
"You are our heroes. Continue to be so," the minister said.
TUBITAK Acting President Professor Nukhet Yetis also addressed the students, saying, "The medals you won belong to you, as well as to us and our country. I thank you for our future." (By Ibrahim Asalioglu)
