Turkish-speaking Students from Around the World Visit Education Minister

A group of students who are in Turkey to attend the 7th International Turkish Olympiads have paid a visit to Education Minister Nimet Çubukçu on Monday. Dressed in their countries' traditional attire, they sang songs and read poems during the visit.

Çubukçu received the students in the Tevfik İleri Hall at the ministry. "I take great pride in being able to address to you in my own language and know that you understand me. I am very much impressed watching you on TV as you sing songs, perform dances and read poems," the Turkish education minister told the students.

Professor Şerif Ali Tekalan, a member of the organizing committee of the 7th International Turkish Language Olympiads, said about 700 students from 115 countries are attending this year's event. Pointing out that these students had been the winners of contests held in their respective countries and that they are the most proficient students selected from among 10,000 students, Tekalan said the competitions are still under way in some fields. Tekalan announced that the awards ceremony, which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will attend, will be held on Saturday.

Education Minister Çubukçu expressed her satisfaction and thanked the students. The students then presented gifts from their respective countries to Çubukçu. In return, Çubukçu gave them presents. She also posed for photos with the students.

A group of students attending the Turkish Olympiads also visited Supreme Court of Appeals President Hasan Gerçeker at his office. Stating that he is proud to see students from all over the world speaking Turkish, Gerçeker said such educational activities strengthen Turkey's relations with other countries.
