Turkish Teachers Teach Iraqi Students
As Iraq moves through its third year of the US occupation, Turkish schools operating in the north of the country are praised for their success and self-sacrificing activities.
Including relatives of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Massoud Barzani, 1,650 students attend Turkish schools.
Fezalar Education Group General Director Talip Buyuk stressing that they have been teaching Iraqi children for 12 years. Armed teachers, he told, had guarded the schools 24 hours a day during the years when violence was at its peak. "We had a very hard time. Now we are one of the most popular educational institutions."
The Group is consists of an elementary school and two high schools in Erbil and two high schools in Suleymaniye. "We will open a new high school in Kerkuk (Kirkuk). It will start classes next year," Buyuk told.
Education at these schools is given in Turkish, English, Kurdish, and Arabic. There are 64 Turkish teachers-40 men and 24 women, and most students prefer the Turkish teachers, he stressed. "We signed an agreement with the Kirkuk Governorship, and the new school will start classes next year," Buyuk announced to the residents of Kirkuk.
