Why are social mobility and professionalization such important features in Hizmet movement?
The Gülen Movement participants have been engaged for a long time in non-formalized, philanthropic or altruistic services. This has led to an extensive cultural training in new (mostly vocational) skills and intellectualization. Hizmet is also strongly committed to professional services, including retraining processes aimed at better-employed actors in the market, projects and institutions.
This social mobility is important for a number of reasons. The most relevant of these reasons for the Gülen Movement is that the more mobile a society is, the fairer and more open it is. That mobility has a positive impact on the way networks, projects and institutions are formed, and their size and shape, and the professionalism in them. Well-educated and qualified members doing proficient work incidentally helps promote the image of the Gülen Movement within the larger social field.
