Judicial Year Begins With Heavy Agenda
There will be heavy traffic in several Ankara courts as well as the Ankara State Security Court (DGM) as the judicial year begins with the Ulucanlar Prison, Bahçelievler Massacre and Fethullah Gülen trials.
The Ulucanlar Prison case was opened after it witnessed a bloody riot last year which security personnel stormed into a dormitory where the political inmates were staging a protest.
The Bahçelievler Massacre case has a long history. The bloody incident took place before the 1980 military coup when a group of nationalist militants killed six leftist students sharing a flat in Ankara's Bahçelievler district.
Another important case which will be tried in a Ankara court concerns Islamist preacher Fethullah Gülen. Public Prosecutor Nuh mete Yuksel demanded a 10-year prison sentence in August for Gülen, who was accused of planning to overthrow Turkey's secular regime. Yuksel argued in a 79-page indictment that Gülen had systematically planted his followers in the civil service, particularly in police ranks and in the Education Ministry, in order to foment religious unrest.
Thirteen former administrators of KIzIlay (Turkish Red Crescent) will face trial on charges of corruption and abuse of office. 2000-06-09 00:00:00
