Samanyolu Schools Spread a Love of Math
The private Samanyolu Schools, known internationally for their achievements at national and international science Olympics, organized "National Primary Schools Math Competition" in an effort to spread its success across Turkey.
The first mathematics competition was organized last year, in which 863 students from 63 cities participated, and this year the second national competition was held on Saturday attended by a large audience. Organized in two sections, 1,132 students and 482 teachers from 532 schools from 71 cities participated. The organization ended after the award ceremony at Kecioren Aktepe Conference Hall in Ankara.
During the program, art shows including the works of Sheik Shamil and Sema were greatly appreciated by the audience. At the award ceremony, 10 students were awarded gold medals, 21 students the silver and 32 students were awarded the bronze medal, totaling 63 medals in all. The top three students were presented with laptop computers and the following 30 students with cellular phones. To encourage the schools of the winning students, the top three schools were presented with a projector, color laser printers, and laser printers.
The medals were presented to the winning students by Justice and Development Party (AKP) Ankara MP,Haluk Ipek and Adiyaman MP Mahmut Goksu, assistant to Director of Primary Education Selahaddin Sahin, Head of Department of Secondary Education Scholarship and Dormitories Halis Koyuncuoglu, Director of Ankara Education Department Murat Bey Balta, and many top level officials. Head of Samanyolu Schools Cemil Koca said at the ceremony that all the students participating in the competition were champions, reminding that there can be no losers in their efforts to spread the love for mathematics to all students throughout the country.
The gold medal students are: Emre Gunay from Izmir Yamanlar Primary School, Serdar Karasen from Erzurum Aziziye Primary School, Muhammed Gundogan from Istanbul Gokkusagi Primary School, Mustafa Comoglu from Erzurum Aziziye Primary School, Gokberk Ozdas from Erzurum Nil Primary School, Onur Samet Ozdamar from Izmir Yamanlar Primary School, Samet Can Govercile from Sakarya Ufuk Primary School, Esra Ulgenfrom Konya Meram Abdullah Aymaz Primary School, Ahmet Bekereci from Kahramanmaras Oz Derya Primary School, and Halil Tuysuz from Sanliurfa Caglayan Primary School.
