Second International Conference on Islam in the Contemporary World: The Fethullah Gülen Movement in Thought and Practice

The Institute of Interfaith Dialog, Texas; the Graduate Program in Religious Studies, Dedman College, Southern Methodist University; and the Office of the Chaplain at Southern Methodist University are sponsoring a conference at on the activities of Fethullah Gülen and their contributions to interfaith dialogue, tolerance, and education. The conference will be held March 4-5, 2006 at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, U.S.A.

Objective

The conference aims to explore the appeal, meaning, and impact of Fethullah Gülen and the Gülen movement on Turkish, regional, and – increasingly – global societies.

Conference Themes

The following possible themes are the range of issues that paper proposers will address. Fethullah Gülen's and the Gülen movement's views and practices related to the:

  • teaching and interpretation of Islamic principles and issues
  • interpretation of the Qur'an, roles and relationships of science, reason, faith, and religion
  • Sufism
  • Turkish "Muslimness"
  • education in contemporary societies
  • interfaith and intercultural dialogue, tolerance and peace
  • understanding of the historical dynamics and references of tolerance, multiculturalism and the Ottoman example
  • terrorism, coercion, and violence
  • jihad
  • the resolution of social, ethnic, and religious conflict in the modern world, and democracy
  • inculcating faith by teaching (tabligh) and by example (tamsil)
  • approaches to universal ethical values
  • Turkey's coexistence with or integration into the European Union
  • the changing role of women in society and in public life.

Conference and Social Activities

Conference receptions for the participants, special guests and hosts will take place on the evening of March 3 and March 4. Travel and accommodations expenses of the invited presenters including airport pick-ups, meals, and organized sight-seeing trips will be met by the organizing committee.
