Evren Harshly Reacted for Coup-praising Remarks
Turkey's 7th President Kenan Evren, said during a TV program recorded at Mugla University, "I did not hesitate to approve the execution decisions and I would order the September 12 coup again if it was today," received harsh criticism by the public opinion.
Lawyer Noyan Ozkan filed a criminal case against Evren for his coup-backing statements and initiated an inquiry.
Mr. Ozkan remarked that those behind the coup should be too ashamed to even speak.
Musa Cam, secretary-general of the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey, said the interim 15th article of the constitution should be annulled and those responsible for the September 12 coup should be brought before the courts.
A. Riza Koca, the Mugla branch chairman of Kemalist Thought Association, criticized Evren. "We do not know why Mugla University invited Evren, the leader of the September 12 junta and who usurped his presidency, through voting under pressure, and who still refuses to abstain from using that title.
While in countries like Greece, Spain, Chile, as well as many others, junta leaders are tried and those tortured during junta trials are elected presidents and prime ministers, Why is Mr. Evren even being hosted?" Koca reacted.
Journalist-writer Mehmet Yurek, who was judged for his statement, "control Marmaris Sports Club and Kenan Evren," called Evren "our top coup-inciters" and commented, "Since we could not try the coup-inciters even 26 years after, our top coup-inciter can say 'I would it all again.'"
Crime reports will also be issued by the Istanbul and Ankara branches of the 78ers Association.
"Kenan Evren, leader of the 12 September 1980 junta, committed crime during this TV program by expressing his crimes in a tone that ridicules the public, heedlessly uttering and not regretting in the slightest his anti-democratic ideas, and praising the coup planned in favor of imperialist states and indigenous dominant powers rather than for the benefit of the nation," was included in the written statement released by the Ankara 78ers Association.
