"Street Movements Damage Economic and Social Stability"
Fethullah Gülen has said street movements negatively affect the positive atmosphere in economic and social life.
In the sixth section of an interview series broadcast on Samanyolu TV, Gülen evaluated the course of the Turkish economy and developments in social life. He noted that today members of the public service prefer to stay away from corruption and this development has a positive affect on economic life. "Psychological problems" will be overcome if a nation believes in itself, according to Gülen.
"This positive psychology can be harmed by incidents in the streets. Therefore, I am concerned, the country may be shaken. Certain things are definitely heading in the right direction. But it seems as if some decisions are being taken on a knife's-edge. Even the recent incident of bird flu has shaken the country considerably. I think we must be careful and consider our country, the country's economy and the credibility of our people."
Constructive abstention regarding Iraq provided credit for Turkey in the region Gülen added. "Destruction of the Ottoman State reduced our influence in the region. Citizens of the region who contributed in this regretted it later. The Christians, Jews and Muslims all say, 'there was peace in the time of the Ottoman State. This gap cannot be filled.' Subconsciously people feel that Turkey has a great deal of credit in order to be able to serve like it did in the past. Our friends traveling there [to the region] are shown respect, and they say 'children of a big state are coming.' If Turkey can pull itself together just a little, then it will be able to use that credit. Then it can be influential in the region."
Sharing his assessments on natural disasters Gülen criticized approaching disasters and calamities with fully "naturalistic and materialistic considerations." According to him, humans play a role in the disasters.
"These disasters might have been caused by some mistakes made by men. Such mistakes might even cause the end of the world. Then it can also move to the Solar System through chain reactions. Certainly, nuclear tests are conducted in the deserts and they are possibly being conducted under the sea as well. They are playing around with the atmosphere. In other words, there is God's warning on one hand and there are crimes we commit against nature. It seems we will be punished for this."
