US-Based Turkish School Wins NASA-Sponsored Science Olympics

The Brooklyn Amity School won 28 medals at the New York City Regional Science Olympics, sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Thirty participants from the school earned 12 gold medals, 12 silver medals and four bronze medals. The 23-year-old contest is sponsored by prestigious institutions, including NASA and the American Chemistry Institute. The school took part in the contest for the second time.

The contest, participated in by 300 participants from 15 schools, ended Saturday. School Principal Metin Çetiner said: "Our students won 28 medals out of 60. Other schools shared the remaining 32. This is such a great honor for us. For a long time, the same schools have placed first or the second in the ranking. It is a team success; a success that did not surprise us." The school, which will compete with 43 schools based in New York state in April, has already begun preparing for the contest. Project Coordinator Celalettin Topbaş said they would succeed at the intrastate contest.

"We fulfilled our goals. Our students believed in success. They were confident they would finish the contest first before the Olympics. The host announced our school 28 times. Because of the frequent announcements, everybody present turned their eyes to us." Starting its preparations two months before the contest, Amity School only took a break during its winter vacation; all contestants took part in the preparations. At the Olympics, some of the participants were involved in interesting competitions. "Tower Building," the project prepared by Muzaffer Erdoğan and Kağan Bulut was slightly damaged before the contest. They rectified the damage and won a golden medal.

The medal winners are Cem Aytaç, Ahmet Şencan, Kaan Köseler, Jonathan Beaver, Nihal Gürsoy, Şahin Alirken, Senih Yildirim, Yunus Yağlidere, Esmir Lalic, Neslihan Kalayci, Sümeyye Kurtulmuş, Hafsa Yücel, Ceren Soyuğurlu, Efe Sakizoğlu, Serin Vurgun, Nihan Gencerliler, Mustafa Bekiroğlu, Emre Erenses, Muzaffer Erdoğan, Kaan Bulut and Merve Turgut.

The contest categories at the Olympics were anatomy, food engineering, tower engineering, entomology, geology, minerals, mechanics, model airplanes, naval science, epidemiology, environmental science. (Mehmet Demirci, New York)
